Volunteer Opportunities

 

Recognizing that engaged Partners are at the heart of SVPC, our goal is to provide opportunities for every interested Partner to give of his/her time, creativity and expertise.

 

 

Serve on an issues committee:  Research the community needs and develop investment opportunities within the following issue areas:

 

o    Public Education

 

o    Affordable Housing

 

o    Healthcare

 

o    Environment

 

 

Serve on an SVPC internal committee:

 

o    Recruitment/Orientation: Assist in development of recruitment/orientation strategy for new and prospective partners, and help coordinate related events

 

o    Marketing/Communication: Help devise overall marketing, communication and outreach strategy to fulfill SVPC’s goals

 

o    Partner Education: Research Partners' educational interests and help develop calendar of events on philanthropy and community issues

 

o    Special Events: Plan and implement special events including Partner socials (2/year),and provide logistical assistance for recruiting and educational events

 

o    Host a recruitment party and/or educational event in your home (with assistance from special events committee)            

 

Volunteer opportunities for and/or with SVPC Investees (groups with whom

SVPC has formed a partnership and given a grant):

 

Partners For Success (a partnership between Communities in Schools and SVPC): A partnership that helps connect area businesses, faith communities, civic groups and other organizations to at-risk students at targeted Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools with the ultimate goal of helping young people stay in school, successfully learn and prepare for life.

 

o    School Friend: Work with CIS student(s) in a particular school (e.g. mentor/tutor, breakfast or lunch buddy, reading buddy etc.)

 

o    Form a Partnership:  Help introduce and form partnership between a high poverty school and your place of business, church and/or civic group (help will be provided by the Partners for Success Advisory Group)

 

 

ASTI (All Star Teacher Initiative): A five-year program of grants, study programs and professional development opportunities designed to attract, reward, train and retain excellent teachers for every classroom in the school (implemented at East Mecklenburg High School).

o    ASTI Expansion: Serve on group to explore expanding program to other schools

 

o    Volunteer at East Mecklenburg High School (tutor, media center, phones, grounds)

 

Habitat Critical Home Repair (HCHR): A program designed to decrease substandard housing conditions for those with limited resources by providing urgent, critical home repairs (defined as a major floor or roof repair).

 

  • Weatherization Committee: help create business plan to grow program

  • Construction Committee: review current staffing, resources, volulnteer leadership, construction manual and other operational  opportunities/efficiencies

  • Family Recruitment Committee: assist in family recruitment strategy and marketing

  • Development Committee: help identify and recruit "adopt-a-project" sponsors

 

 

Nurse Family Partnership (NFP) Work Groups: An evidence-based intensive home visiting program that improves the health, well-being and self-sufficiency of first-time, low-income parents and their children. NFP nurse home visitors provide education and family support during the child’s first two years, working to improve pregnancy outcomes, child health and development and the economic self sufficiency of the family. SVPC has funded an NFP project director to develop a strategic plan for expanding, implementing and sustaining the capacity of the NFP program in Mecklenburg County. As the process and planning unfolds, there will be work groups formed to support and move forward with various aspects of the planning and implemention. 

 

 

  • Work Group for Funding Strategies: develop overall funding strategy for NFP expansion in Mecklenburg County

  • Work Group for Nurse Recruitment, Quality and Retention: develop a plan for the recruitment and retention of nurses

  • Work Group for Family Recruitment and Engagement: develop a plan for client recruitment which includes specific incentives and opportunities to keep families engaged in the program to reduce attrition rates

  • Work Group for Community Support Services: identify adn connect NFP with the appropriate community agencies to improve access to supportive services including housing, child care, education, job skills and mental health services. 

Workforce Initiative for Supportive Housing (WISH): A program that connects highly-screened working families, including children, with affordable housing and supportive services.

 

o    Hope Teams: Join a group of volunteers offering direct support to a WISH person or family facing homelessness (including 2 hours of training and approximately 1 hour/week of volunteer time)

 

o    Moving Ministry: Join a group formed on certain Saturdays to move a WISH family from a shelter into their new apartment (good one-time project; good family project)
