School starts back up at the end of this month, and SVP Investee Heart Math Tutoring is working to pair 600 students who are struggling in elementary math with a tutor who can give skills and confidence critical to their success. Students are missing the basics, and the remedy is hands-on activities and games; easy for delivery by volunteers.

Heart gives tutors lesson plans that target and close the assessed gaps for each individual student. To date, 98% of students tutored by Heart volunteers have met program growth goals in math set with guidance from specialists at UNCC and CMS.

Tutoring with Heart is a commitment of 1 hour per week, for approximately 20 – 25 weeks over the course of the school year. Tutors have flexibility to reschedule to a different day and/or swap with their partner tutor.

SVP Partner Jim Ratchford is one of 23 weekly tutors who came from SVP in the 2015/16 school year. He and his wife, Denise, are partner tutors.
