SVP Charlotte is excited to announce our newest multi-year investments! Thanks to generous contributions of both time, professional experience and money from our network of Partners, SVP is investing in three high-impact nonprofits for 2018. We look forward to working with them to make our community a better place! Please meet:
Profound Gentlemen, Executive Director, Jason Terrell
Currently, 2 states across the nation have a high school graduation rate of 80% for boys of color. Study’s show that when boys of color have male educators of color, they are more likely to graduate from high school, experience increased self-esteem, and have greater chances of pursuing a four-year college degree. Unfortunately, only 2% of teachers in public schools are men of color. Although there are efforts to recruit men of color into education, schools and districts struggle more with retaining men of color than recruiting. Currently, men of color leave the education profession higher than any other demographic. Our mission is to a build community of male educators of color who provide a profound additional impact on boys of color. Our vision is to retain educators who dismantle the cradle to prison pipeline by establishing a cradle to career pipeline for boys of color.
Promising Pages, Executive Director, Kristina Cruise
Promising Pages is a nonprofit organization that inspires underserved children to achieve their dreams by instilling a love of reading. Fueled by studies showing that children who can’t read proficiently by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school, Promising Pages provides innovative classroom programs and more than 100,000 free books annually, making us Charlotte’s largest and most efficient distributor of upcycled books aimed at addressing this critical – and solvable – community need.
GenOne Charlotte, Executive Director, Ian Joyce
Gen-One Charlotte believes that by supporting high potential children’s access to the wealth of resources available to them, we can fulfill the promise of the “American Dream.” This support lies with an intensive mentorship and intensive academic support program that identifies high potential candidates and builds a lasting relationship and advocacy for the child and their family. We believe that this relationship is foundational as Gen-One Charlotte supports program participants in making life changing choices for generations to come. Through our efforts, we believe we can support participating students and place them on a different academic trajectory toward greater opportunities in life.
