In the Spring of 2006, Rachel Humphries was teaching English as a Second Language through Central Piedmont Community College to a group of recently arrived Montagnard (a region in Vietnam) refugees at an apartment complex in East Charlotte. As Rachel and volunteer Lauren Moore were exposed to and educated about the refugee population in Charlotte, they grew to love the people and started connecting refugees with locals who could help meet their additional needs outside the classroom. In 2006, Refugee Support Services was founded and has continued to grow and evolve.

To kick off 2016, this growing nonprofit has moved to a larger Help Center and serves more than 50 refugees every day the doors are open. Humphries and company were mentioned as one of dedicated groups that made Charlotte better in 2015. See that article from Charlotte Observer here.

An excited and hopeful Humphries shares, “We are serving 60-100 refugees every day the doors are open. It is exciting to be a part of this community and watch refugee friends contribute their skills to our community and learn to call Charlotte home!”
