Carley Porter, a rising senior at Davidson College, joins SVP Charlotte this summer as an intern for three months. Carley’s main responsibilities are writing articles for the SVP newsletter, keeping up with administrative duties, and helping plan the SVP 10th anniversary party scheduled for this fall. Two days a week, Carley works directly with Sil Ganzo at ourBRIDGE, a SVP Investee and past SEED20 participant.
Carley found SVP through Betsy Marshall, a friend at Davidson whose parents, Margaret and Harrison Marshall, are deeply involved with SVP. At Davidson, Carley is a psychology major and Hispanic studies minor, and is involved outside the classroom by serving as a campus tour guide and working in the human resources office. She spent Fall 2014 studying in Barcelona, Spain.
Discovering her passion for nonprofit and community work in high school, Carley earned the title of President of Davidson’s ‘Colleges Against Cancer’ chapter and became involved with her social organization’s annual early breast cancer detection fundraiser, Bosom Buddies, her first year at the college. Since then she has worked as a silent auction team member and committee head. Currently she is co-chair for Bosom Buddies 2016 event, which embodies a silent and live auction, catered dinner, and an informative and emotional program that has grown in popularity and success over the past 15 years.
“Since I’m so involved with nonprofit work at Davidson, I’m really excited to learn about how SVP works and meet the people behind it. I think this exposure to a city-wide, high-functioning organization will give me ideas for changes that can be made to our Bosom Buddies program at school,” Carley says. She hopes to meet as many of you as possible through her involvement this summer (or at the 10th anniversary party in the fall!) and wishes everyone a happy and healthy summer.
