A great thank you to the attorneys at McGuireWoods for hosting the latest workshop for the SEED20 Alumni Network, Ask-A-Lawyer Night!
This evening was a direct result of hearing from the Alumni what resources they most needed, and the nonprofit representatives were rewarded with excellent legal advice and new relationships. Dinner was shared followed by breakout sessions on many topics including employment law, donor relations, working with your Board of Directors, trademarks and many others. With this arrangement, the Alumni were able to attend the sessions of most value to them and get their issues addressed. Both the nonprofits and the attorneys responded that this was a “great event” with the hope from both that “we can do it again next year”! A few of the Alumni share their experience from the evening below.
“The Ask A Lawyer night was a tremendous help for our organization. The education and insights I gained – particularly about board governance – will serve our organization for many years to come. For new and growing non-profits, such an opportunity is invaluable, yet often inaccessible. Thank you McGuire Woods!” Kelly Finley, Girls Rock
“The Alumni Network: Ask A Lawyer night was awesome! The McGuire Woods team offered so many tangible insights into what legal safe guards and services a non-profit like YDI needs to consider in order to become and remain a viable entity. The sessions provided lesson application that addressed various potential legal tripping points in such areas as human resources (hiring and firing best practices), to protecting one’s intellectual property, to how to effectively establish and build a successful board of directors. I was the last to leave!” Darryl L. Bego, President/CEO of Youth Development Initiatives INC.
“Ask a Lawyer Night” is a great example of the many benefits of being a SEED20 alumnus. So many of us are faced with legal issues – like real estate leases, copyright questions, compensation and employee benefits, etc. Seeking advice from attorneys is often intimidating and potentially expensive. The opportunity to meet with the lawyers from McGuire Woods in a relaxed, after work atmosphere helped us answer many of our questions and gave us a chance to discuss some of the issues we are facing.” Dick Sesler, Camp Blue Skies
